Tempest on Wanaka was born of the idea of offering guests a warm, friendly, welcoming place to stay in Wanaka. As frequent world travellers, owners Chris & Lin Tempest understand the needs of people travelling far from home. They believe guests need spacious surroundings, a great shower, a comfortable bed, and a great breakfast.

 

The surname Tempest originates from Bradford, Yorkshire in the north of England.  In English, the word means storm. Tempest on Wanaka is a pun on the family name and a storm on the lake.

 

This Wanaka accommodation option began as a way to share their love of the Otago area, meet new people, and share their warm hospitality. Wanaka was the natural choice for Chris & Lin in their post-corporate years due to lifestyle, climate, family, friends, and the amazing scenery that inspires Lin's work.

 

Before embarking on their journey with hosted accommodation, they both had successful careers in the medical field, raised a family together and now have the joy of 6 grandchildren.

 

In their corporate days:

Chris practised as a veterinarian, specialising in avian medicine – he was a veterinary director in NZ’s largest poultry providing company and then started his own game bird business. Before moving to Wanaka in 2016, he managed a boutique hotel in the Wellington CBD.

 

Lin practised as a nurse in coronary/cardiac and intensive care, then as a nursing care manager in an old folks’ home, in general medical practice, and a government public health programme vaccinating children.

 

In the 6 years that they have been operating as a bed and breakfast, they have found that the 3 most important things for visitors to Wanaka are;

1. A great place to stay.  

2. A great place to dine.

3. Getting out among the amazing scenery.
